Energy study at an industrial site

Type: Master project (30 credits)

Period: 2016 Spring

Student: Matteo Latinov

Assistant: Elfie Méchaussie

Company: INEOS

Objectives:

Studying the energy optimisation potential of a chemical site in located in Italy (O&P South Rosignano) by carrying out a thorough energy review, determining key performance indicators and identifying energy savings opportunities.

Tasks:

Site energy review:

  • identify energy vectors, quantify consumption
  • identify and caracterise main energy consumers
  • mass & energy balances (grey box level: process-utility interface only)
  • use of data reconciliation tools, models
Energy integration study:
  • pinch analysis on a grey box level
  • energy/steam optimisation, integration opportunities
  • metering improvements
  • cost allocation per unit/plant

Energy planning (non-binding recommendations)

  • planning report in support of EU-EED and ISO 50001
  • focus on process optimisation and site integration
  • energy saving and management measures based on energy audit (EnA) baseline

Scope

  • The EI study is performed at grey box level, indicating that -if possible and relevant- energy balances, profiles and recommendations are presented at unit or plant level without entering the process details. The aim is to track the energy flows, identify returns, losses, efficiencies, etc. and spot production units or sites of prior review interest.
  • The energy planning is based on the data collected from the EI study and the regional rules, in casu compliance with the Italian EnA context; to the extent known at the start of the study.
  • The study aims at delivering energy and process optimisation recommendations; the findings can be prioritised or refined afterwards in close collaboration with the site experts, if so decided.
  • The study as described will be carried out by an EPFL Master student, performing an internship at the Rosignano site for a period of ca 3-4 months, under local supervision of the companies’ project leader.

Work realisation:

The student will have access to all necessary data and information through the collaboration with on-site engineers and operators, and is embedded within the broader context of two PhDs. All projects make use of the IPESE developed OSMOSE tool, and the prospect of developing further methods and tools to reach the set targets are taken into consideration (Matlab, Vali, Aspen, etc.).

A research plan will be defined in the early stages of the work, to be validated by all concerned parties. The student will report regularly in view of progress update, feedback and input. Local project leaders and onsite engineers are first lines of contact. Weekly meetings are recommended in the early stages of the project, periodic telecons with the supervising team are welcomed.

After the first months, the student will present an intermediary report to the EPFL industrial project leadership team. A thesis report will be written and presented at the end of the internship duration and will be reworked in a final report and presentation in order to discuss, validate and finalise the project.
