SCOPES – Computer Aided Process Engineering applied to energy, water, and waste reduction during process design and operation

Source: Swiss National Fund (SNF)

Partners: University of Maribor

This project addresses the development of computer aided process system engineering methodologies applied to energy, water, and waste reduction during the process design and operation. In particular, it addresses the synthesis and optimization of the combined network consisting of water network, wastewater treatment network and heat exchanger network in order to systematically explore all possible interconnections between as well as within networks and propose optimal solutions of network designs with minimum freshwater and hot and cold utility consumption as well as minimum wastewater generation.

As several input data are subjected to fluctuations and uncertainty, we will incorporate the approaches for considering uncertainty during the synthesis and design of combined networks, thus generating flexible and operable process solutions. The relations between the economic, operational and environmental efficiencies of the proposed designs will be taken into account in order to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of designs. The tools for multi-objective optimization will be developed for generating the sets of compromise solutions regarding the profitability and environmental influences of the combined networks.
